What’s Lomilomi?

Lomilomi is a traditional Hawaiian healing method that has been used for centuries in ancient Hawaii and continues to be used in modern times. In the Hawaiian language, the word  “lomi”, means to rub, to press, to push, to knead, and to massage out. Some of the benefits that lomilomi offers are tension and stiffness relief of the muscles and improved blood and lymph flow.

A part of the lomilomi process that we provide is called Ho’oponopono. Ho’oponopono is a purification treatment that cuts off negative events from the past. We support you to remove negative energy that you may have held on to unknowingly in your life. We then help you to fill the space with heartwarming mana (energy), to help heal you so that you can move forward in your life with love, happiness and gratitude.

The Special Features of Lei Aloha Lomilomi?

The unique features that distinguishes   Lei Aloha’s lomilomi are the Opu Huli and Shell Healing techniques. These specialties have been passed down to Lei Aloha from Kumu Karen Leialoha Carroll. Lei Aloha now feels that it is their kuleana (responsibility) to keep the tradition alive by teaching students through a certification program about the culture, the process and the benefits of a traditional Hawaiian Lomilomi treatment.

<Opu Huli>

Opu Huli is the abdominal treatment that puts the internal organs back in in alignment. Many have experienced better digestion, constipation relief, body realignment and lower back pain relief as well.   Opu Huli has been used successfully on crying babies, calming them down and often allowing them to sleep better.

For women, Opu Huli can be combined with the resetting of the uterus. When the uterus is reset, better circulation and blood flow occurs therefore enhancing the possibilities of getting pregnant.

<Shell healing : Kumu Karen’s legacy>

Shell healing  has been used as a healing technique in ancient Hawaii, Although there may different ways to use shells in the healing process, the process and techniques used by Lei Aloha are the methods that was channeled by Kumu Karen from the sprits of royalty in Hawaii. The results of using this method of shell healing have shown to loosen up tight muscles, pain reduction, increased energy and regaining of mental and physical balance.

This proprietary method of shell healing has only been shared through the teachings of  Kumu Kehaulani (Tomoko’Kehaulani’ Sugino), Director of Lei Aloha Lomilomi, and Kumu Karen. Since Kumu Karen’s passing, Kumu Kehaulani is the only authorized person to teach this method of shell healing in the world. She now teaches this through Lei Aloha Lomilomi in Japan and Hawaii.

History of Lomilomi

Lomilomi massage (lomilomi) is believed to have originated in ancient Polynesia and spread to the Hawaiian Islands by its people who settled there. Lomilomi means to rub, press, massage or break up. However, lomilomi is more than a massage. It addresses the emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being too. Much of this is done through the breath or ha. Through the ha, much mana (energy) is utilized for healing in addition to any medicinal herbs that may have been needed.

The Hawaiians believed that mana exist in all things including nature. There are many Kahu (Hawaiian equivalent of a priest or pastor) in Hawaii who can manage the Mana freely. They pray for nature’s blessings to humanity and perform ceremonies at a Heiau (Hawaiian temple) to heal patients.

These traditional ideas, such as nature worship, living with nature and natural energy, are deeply rooted within the Hawaiian culture. The idea that god dwells in everything that exists in nature, such as ocean, sky, wind, stone, rock, tree, soil, is said to be very similar to Shinto faith, Yaoyorozu no Kami (eight million gods).

Western culture was brought into Hawaii in 1800s. Hawaiian traditional culture like Hawaiian language, the hula, and lomilomi were then considered as heresy and forbidden because Hawaiian culture, religion, the values, and lifestyle were all different from Western ones. Hawaiian traditional culture was in danger of disappearing, but fortunately it had been inherited secretly within Hawaiian families, and lomilomi is no exception.

At that time, people from children to the elderly started giving lomilomi to their families. It soon became a ritual where they would get together at the end of the day, give lomilomi to each other, while sharing the day’s events. This helped to bring cohesiveness and love to their ohana (families) during the over throw of the Hawaiian Monarchy while western ways were being implemented.

Lomilomi has been diversified since it had been inherited secretly within families in the pressure of Western culture. Therefore, it has evolved into various types of schools, methods and techniques. Although there are now many variations, at the basis of all Hawaiian lomilomi is love and divine source.
